Guggenheimer

Catherine Opie, what happens when one must covertly 'shoot from the hip' (photography wise that is)

Guggenheiming on a cold Friday evening.

This was the first place we visited after checking into New York. We happened to go on the 'pay whatever you want' night so the place was packed (as is much of New York really...)

There were a few shows on, the main ones being 'theanyspacewhatever' and the Catherine Opie exhibition.

Neither exhibitions were really that interesting and we were rather perplexed by the way in which the art was installed throughout the gallery. Claudia, who had been at the Guggenheim for the Louise Bourgeois retrospective, noted how much the space wasn't really used well with this particular exhibition (theanyspacewhatever) in comparision to the retrospective. Things were rather blotchy, placed everywhere and nowhere...

I only really enjoyed one part of the Catherine Opie show as well (pictured in the weird angle photo above) where the room had a row of photos of surfers at a beach, and the other wall had a row of houses in winter.

I chilled with Rikrit's video installation then had enough of the place by then (too many people crushing on my space) and decided to leave.

All in all, a disappointing first time at the Guggenheim. Although, the building really is as lovely as people say it is. I don't understand the bathroom situation though. Heaps of individual bathrooms placed throughout, I found it rather strange...
